Journeymen Saddlers

· By Steven Schwartz, Contributing Writer · From pages 34 of the print edition

IN MIDDLEBURG IT SEEMS LIKE horses outnumber people. Since 1978 their owners and riders have come to Journeymen Saddlers for clothing, tack and repairs. Owner Punkin Lee and her score of employees make sure that boots and chaps fit perfectly, and that their many customers have everything both for the barn and "after the barn".

Punkin says, "People come in ranging from occasional riders to serious competitors. It's great to see so many local riders like Joe Fargus, Alison Firestone, Abigail Lufkin, John Williams, Jan Thompson, and David and Karen O'Connor doing so well in selection trials for the Olympics this year." She continues, "It's a pleasure to say that they are our customers."

This morning, Elizabeth Brewer's chaps are being fitted by Kevin Caporalletti. He and his fellow employees craft custom chaps and belts, and repair boots, saddles, bridles, and equipment. In fact, Journeymen Saddlers makes custom chaps for many tack shops across the country.

"Twenty years ago," says Punkin, "we added apparel to our repair business. Our retail women's and men's clothing is classic sportswear - current but not trendy. People appreciate our selection, which can't be found at a mall."

Journeymen Saddlers offers women's hats, separates, accessories and shoes. For men there is a selection of shirts, trousers and shorts, ties, and Brighton/Legion belts. The shop also sells distinctive gifts and small leather goods.

"We have a lot to offer, but rubber muck boots are often the bottom line for what they want," laughs Punkin Lee.

And then there is that wonderful aroma. Long time customers may no longer notice, but Journeymen Saddlers' 25 years of leather and oil envelopes you as you step in the door. "We've had fragrance salesmen offer to sell us room fresheners, but it seems our customers like it just the way it is" says Punkin Lee.
