Thomas Hays & Son Jewelers

· By Steven Schwartz, Contributing Writer · From pages 35 of the print edition

WHERE CAN A GUY FROM New York find the rare combination of country living and people with sophistication? After traveling across the country in a converted van, the young Thomas Hays found exactly what he was looking for right here in Middleburg.

"Once I found this beautiful area, I started with a boutique and silversmith shop" says Tom. "32 years later, I still love what I do. Everything I bring into the store or make, I have to like." He continues, "It all adds up to a distinctive look that connects with the tastes of my customers. I offer the kind of jewelry and jewelry making that you can usually only see in New York or Europe."

Thomas Hays & Son Jewelers is a brightly lit space; at the end of the store is a large case containing Hays' hand engraved and highly detailed originals. Other displays are filled with antique and contemporary jewelry, as well as elegant silver pieces - candlesticks, picture frames, wine coolers, turnes, tea sets and trays. Looking like a gallery, the store is a bright, cheery space that owner Tom Hays fills with a friendly, relaxed atmosphere.

"Because buying jewelry is for a happy occasion like getting engaged, anniversaries, and birthdays, I want to make sure people feel comfortable and enjoy the experience," says Tom. Hays also repairs the most delicate and precious pieces, a service greatly appreciated by the store's customers.

"It takes more than one generation to build a jewelry business" says Tom. "I'm seeing the daughters and sons of my long time customers in the shop, I realize how lucky I am to be living and working in this wonderful small town." He adds, "To do what you love, making and providing beautiful things for people, what more could a guy want?"
