Letters to the Editor - Lisa Leonard in Memory
Some enter politics for power. Others enter to make a difference. As a constituent in the 10th Congressional District for the past 20 years, I know that Congressman Frank Wolf fits the latter category.
Do you know that Congressman Wolf spent New Year's Eve 2002 in Ethiopia and Eritrea? As co-chairman of the Congressional Human Rights Caucus, Congressman Wolf draws attention to egregious violations of human rights worldwide. While politicians fitting the first profile are wining and dining with major donors, our Congressman is trying to make others' lives less miserable.
Congressman Wolf has lived in and owned the same property in Vienna since 1974. He and his wife Carolyn raised their five children there. Their children attended the local public schools. I have seen the Wolf's be a vital part of our community for over 20years.
Congressman Wolf's performance as my representative in Congress improves the quality of my life and that of my family through his work in the area of transportation. How many of us would be living in Loudoun County without it? Did you know that Frank Wolf was instrumental in reducing the HOV restrictions from 4 to 2 on I-66? Did you know that he worked to keep the Dulles Toll Road from becoming another I-66 with HOV restrictions? I remember his arguments that the road was built with taxpayer dollars thus all taxpayers should use the road. The left HOV lane on the Toll Road is the compromise.
I am safer on the roads today because of Frank Wolf's devoted work in the area of truck safety. As chairman of the House Transportation Appropriations Subcommittee Frank Wolf was instrumental in the creation of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. Today Virginia receives federal grant money for truck inspections. We shouldn't have to worry whether the trash truck in our neighborhood will be able to stop if a child runs into the street.
Congressman Wolf goes about his business quietly and patiently. He neither boasts of his accomplishments nor disparages his detractors. His record speaks for itself. Frank Wolf earnestly serves our district's needs. His 2003 voting record shows that he was on the proper side of important issues. Those bills he voted in favor of passed; the majority of those that he opposed failed. He is a principled man who does not compromise his values or subjugate his constituents. He is well liked and respected by his peers.
Recently I looked at results of the Virginia SOL scores. Do you know that over one third of the top 100 Virginia public schools are located in the 10th District?
On November 2nd we have a choice. Our choice can be life-changing. I support Frank Wolf. He represents our interests. He is a senior member of the House of Representatives with much influence and experience. I support Frank Wolf for Congress because he is a good and humble servant.
