Adventure in Shopping

· By Steven Schwartz · From pages 39 of the print edition

Here's a quick quiz about the history of retail in Middleburg. Which of the town's stores, 1) is the oldest, 2) stocks over a million products? And 3) fill in the blank - "Kids, if you don't behave, we won't go to the ________!

There is only one store where, since 1956, parents have taken their children for clothing and toys, bought presents and greeting cards, and furnished their homes - that store is the one and only Fun Shop. It all began when Nancy Allen started a children's toy shop and moved into a building with her husband Howard's photography business. Today, the store fills two floors in three buildings. "I've been pushed up to the third floor," Howard laughs.

Nancy's daughters Betsy Davis and Page Allen run the shop with a great team of employees, most have been with the company for many years. Recently celebrating her twenty fifth year with the store, Terry Bell recalls a man who came in with his children. "I recognized him-as someone who, many years ago, had a full blown tantrum - he was lying on the floor kicking and screaming! I reminded him of the incident and we all had a good laugh. It's so wonderful to see the children of our customers come in."

This family-owed business has four generations in the store today. Nancy's great-granddaughter Emma is held by granddaughter Liza. Reflecting on her long and successful career, Nancy says, "I like people so much...I love helping them find what they are looking for."

She and her daughters have created a one-of-a-kind shop that has served the community for over 48 years.

"There is a myth that Middleburg stores are expensive. Very often people pick up one of our items and say, 'I just bought this same thing at a mall and I paid a lot more for it.' We work very hard to carry products that offer good quality at an affordable price."

Whether a reward for children's good behavior, or the place to stop for a special gift, "The Macys of Middleburg" has to be experienced to be believed. Nancy laughs when she recalls what one customer was inspired to say about her store - "If the Fun Shop doesn't have it, you don't need it!"
