Building a Business on Trust

· By Steven Schwartz · From pages 38 of the print edition

The new retail businesses in town can look downhill for guidance on how to be successful in Middleburg. Middleburg Millwork has been a trusted provider to the community since founders David Ball and Dan Burner began making custom cabinets way back in 1969. At the request of local builders and homeowners they added building materials and, for the past 35 years, have supplied lumber for thousands of projects. A few years ago David's son Bob took over the family business.

"I've been here since I was old enough to walk, and since I took over the business, we've added a lot of new products," says Bob. "Many people don't know we carry a full line of hardware, tools, paint, and fasteners. As a matter of fact, our hardware supplier is the second largest hardware company in the country - so, whatever we don't have we can special order. People also think they have to go to a big home supply to get good prices, but we work hard to make sure our materials are affordable."

The company's main areas of business are building supplies, the millwork shop, and custom-designed kitchens. "As a local supplier, we offer convenience to contractors and homeowners with our good parking, free delivery, and we encourage people to come by to pick up our free wood shavings (for animal bedding) and kindling.

Bob and his friendly staff, both outside in the yard and in the office, are ready to help you find the right materials for your projects. Mary Jane Furman, Vice President, started out as a bookkeeper and has helped grow the business since 1985. Cindy Wines knows where every screw and nail is located, and the guys in the shop can make absolutely anything you need. One customer recently asked the Millwork to custom-make her new windows, not trusting the quality of those made in a factory.

On Saturday mornings it's a weekly ritual - scores of local customers (weekend warriors) first hit the coffee shop, and then head down to Middleburg Millwork to get supplies for their weekend projects.

The store's best selling product gives a clue to how special the Middleburg area really is. "We sell more oak fence boards than any other product," says Bob. "We are proud to be part of this beautiful community, and to have so many great customers."
