Middleburg Elementary Opens New Playground

· From pages 12 of the print edition

Trust advisors know it is as hard to manage money as it is to make it, and that with wealth comes responsibility to give back and invest in one's community. Local philanthropist Sheila Johnson took a pro-active approach with her children by giving each of them the responsibility of managing an annual $25,000 contribution to an institution or organization of their choice.

When her son, Brett, decided to use his 2004 contribution to purchase new playground equipment for Middleburg Elementary School, everyone in the school and the community was delighted. Unfortunately, when the final plan for the playground was approved, the total cost was twice what Brett had in his contribution account.

Did he ask the school to cut back? Not at all. He did what any conscientious citizen would do: he asked for help in all the right places.

After Mrs. Johnson made a call to General Mills, their executives quickly agreed that matching Brett's contribution would be an excellent way for the company to contribute to the future of Middleburg.

Recently, on a beautiful October day, the ribbon was cut and young students gleefully inaugurated the slides, swings, climbing bars and recreational activities provided by Brett Johnson's generosity.
