A Home for All Seasons: Welcome Home

· By Wanda K. Crossley · From pages 14, 15 of the print edition

Spring has sprung, but it may still be winter inside your home.

As seasonal change is invigorating outside, the variety of change inside your home can also have an extraordinary effect on you and your family's mood and attitude.

Whether you wish to do a lot, or a little, you will enjoy the benefits of a home for all seasons. Consider these ideas when you begin.

Freshen up your upholstery with bright new summer slipcovers. Heavy woven winter fabrics with rich colors, designs and texture are perfect for cozying up to a warm fire. But summer fabrics of lightweight cotton brighten up a room and are cool to the skin. While you're at it, re-cover your winter throw pillows in whimsical contrasting colors and designs.

Once considered a luxury, summer pillow and upholstery slipcovers are more affordable than you might think. They custom fit your pieces like a tailored suit. They are zippered and Velcro-ed for easy installation and quickly removable for same-day wash and wear. On the off-season, cotton slipcovers are easily stored in a closet without the need for mothproofing.

Summer breeze makes you feel fine, so take down those heavy window treatments, put up lighter, airy sheers and open the windows. Today's sheers come in fun textures and colors, including polka-dots, stripes and prints. Sheers are simple and carefree and easier to make than complex window treatments.

Rearrange your furniture so you have more access to the sunlight and look out at your garden in bloom, rather than being focused on the fireplace. Furniture with harmonious shapes and classical proportions will look attractive in many different arrangements.

Roll up your area rugs and walk barefoot on your hardwood floors for a couple months.

Hang botanical prints or some new artwork you love that's light and sunny to replace the heavy oils and thick frames. Scatter summer seashore and gardening books on the coffee table and bring out the colored vases for fresh flowers from the garden.

Now how about a little running fountain in that sunroom or sitting room? Even a small wall mounted piece will offer a little water trickle, giving the ambiance of being outside.

Find some new bright colored striped or print tablecloths for the kitchen table and bring out your casual summer china.

Now, make some iced tea and settle in to a crisp, light contest for the new season.
