Juanita Swedenburg's Big Day in Court

· From pages 2 of the print edition

After years of determination, The Supreme Court ruled today in favor of Juanita Swedenbourg position that wine lovers should be able to buy directly from out-of-state vineyards, striking down laws banning a practice that has flourished because of the Internet and growing popularity of winery tours, according to the AP news wire.

In a 5-4 decision, the Court agreed with the case made in the Swedenbourg suit, effectively equalizing the rules of commerce in the wine industry and putting an end to the laws in 24 states that barred interstate shipments.

"This is the best day for wine lovers since the invention of the corkscrew," said Clint Bolick, counsel for the Institute of Justice which represented local wineries in the dispute.
