Middleburg Elementary News - Students Plant Rain Garden

· From pages 22, 23 of the print edition

Middleburg Elementary has recently received a grant from the Loudoun Soil and Water Conservation District. This $500 grant was used to plant a "Rain Garden" on the Middleburg school grounds. The purpose of a Rain Garden is to offer a natural solution to water pollution. These gardens capture the rain water from parking lots and roads and slowly filters the run-off into the ground rather than into a storm sewer. The garden features native plantings and will not only improve the natural environment but will be an aesthetically pleasant and ongoing instructional opportunity for the students. Lisa McGuinness, a Middleburg parent volunteer and experienced gardener, has organized the effort. If the community is willing to donate seeds, trellis, garden tools or other supplies, please contact the school.
