HYPOCRISY
Hypocrisy by definition " two faced, deceptive, duplicitous and insincere." Is there a more egregious noun?
In the coming months I will be writing articles pointing out hypocrisy in governments, corporations, politicians, media, organized religion, war on terror and other hot button items. Hopefully by exposing hypocrisy we can attempt to put an end to some of it.
The articles will be short, to the point and topical. I would be pleased with reader response in the form of disagreement, agreement and suggestions for future related articles.
The Recent Super Bowl brings back memories of a famous mammary gland that suddenly slips out of its container at half time Super Bowl 2004 . Not only does the event make national and international news, the press is obsessed for weeks, congress is convened to hold hearings, the FCC is called to testify and the network is censured and fined. More important than a document that proves prewar intelligence was not only cherry picked but falsified?
Al Jazeera, the Arabic news network is praised by the US government for its tough reporting on totalitarian governments in the Middle East. It is called democratic and fair in its reporting before 9/11
Comes 9/11, the invasion of Afghanistan and later Iraq. Al Jazeera is not embedded with U.S. or coalition forces does not check with the military or State Department on what it should or should not report and is the only news agency on the ground during the siege of Fallujah. They are now highly criticized by the Bush Administration as aiding the enemy. Their offices in Kabul and Baghdad are "accidentally" bombed an Al Jazeera reporter is killed. Al Jazeera claims to have given the U.S. and coalition forces their coordinates so they would not be in danger of accidental bombing. Another Downing Street Document is leaked and published in an English newspaper that reveals Bush suggested to Blair they bomb Al Jazeera's headquarters in Doha Qatar. Blair reportedly tells Bush that would not be a good idea. Bush press secretary says it was said in jest. The memo, not denied ,is prevented from further publication by the British Secrets Act.
The invasion of Iraq, sold mainly on the emotion of Sept.11, has caused the deaths of almost as many American troops as died on that tragic day in New York. It has also caused the deaths of 35,000 to 100,000 innocent Iraqi civilians, depending on which survey you choose to believe, (even president Bush has finally acknowledged the lesser figure), severely injured and made orphans of untold numbers of Iraqi children. The country has been named by many international organizations as the most dangerous on the planet.
If you can stomach seeing the real horrors of war seek out one or all of the three recently released documentaries on the siege of Fallujah. An American film, "Fallujah the Guernica of The 21st Century" ,Italian "Fallujah the Hidden Massacre" and an Iraqi independent film titled "Fallujah the Real Story", and then ask yourself if it has all been worth it.
As horrific as September 11 was to all Americans and most of the world I believe it must be put into some kind of rational perspective. Other countries have suffered similar or worse tragedies without the ongoing consequences that 9/11 evokes each and every day here in America. You can not go through a complete news day in America without hearing the numbers nine eleven. That tragic day has been a scapegoat for the executive branch of this government to put itself above the law.
The same number of children die daily around the world from hunger and disease as were killed on that historic day in September. Just think a 9/11 every day that goes virtually unnoticed.
We must honor all human life in order to achieve peace in the world.
