Middleburg Celebrates Arbor Day

· From pages 23 of the print edition

Middleburg's 2006 Arbor Day Celebration will be held on Saturday, April 29th at Middleburg Elementary School at 9:00 AM. Middleburg has once again been named a Tree City USA by The National Arbor Day Foundation to honor its commitment to its community forest.

Kelley Wagner, Virginia Department of Forestry, will make the presentation of the award to Mayor Tim Dimos as part of the Arbor Day Celebration. This year's celebration will include the dedication of the 2006 Middleburg Arbor Day Tree, a Sawtooth Oak, donated by Middleburg Beautification and Preservation, Inc. and planted by Tree Movers on the Middleburg Elementary School grounds. Fourth Graders from the elementary school will play a musical tribute in honor of Arbor Day.

Mayor Dimos and Middleburg Elementary School Principal Gary Wilkers will be on hand to present awards to this year's Arbor Day Poster Contest Winners. The theme for the contest was "Leaf Our Trees for Us" and children in Kindergarten through Fifth Grades participated. Poster contest awards will be provided by the Town of Middleburg and Books & Crannies.

Refreshments will be provided by the Middleburg Elementary School PTO. Tree seedlings will be distributed in memory of Peaches Lee, a long time Middleburg resident and former Town Postmaster who passed away earlier this spring. Mayor Dimos said, "I remember Mr. Lee as a warm and gentle man whose broad smile and big heart beckoned magnetically. Even as a child, you knew in an instant that there was nothing not to like about this man. His company brought good feelings to all around him – young and old and in between. We will miss him much as we might miss our own parent."

The Arbor Day Celebration is a community effort enjoying the support of Middleburg Beautification and Preservation, Inc., Loudoun Soil and Water Conservation District, Middleburg Elementary School, The Hill School, area merchants and town residents.
