The Editor's Desk: Conviction Takes Courage

· From pages 10 of the print edition

Our village benefits from a diversity of views. Engaged citizens who have valuable opinions work hard to work together no matter how much their views may differ. This collaboration strengthens our community and contributes significantly to the special spirit and character of this place.

Lately, however, there is a troubling tendency to cower in anonymity when expressing personal views. Letters have been sent to town leaders that convey highly negative or vicious personal attacks. The result is time wasted and the frustration of hard-working and highly committed individuals.

It takes no more energy to take responsibility for your point of view than it does to pen an anonymous critique and drop it in the letter box in the dark of night. And, by taking credit for your opinion, you are ensured a response.

We welcome the opinions and critiques of our readers, but we consider anonymous comment the endeavor of cowards who do not have the courage of their convictions.

Those who are uncomfortable taking credit for their opinions should closely review whether or not they are worth holding.
