The Plains Community House Fund Established
The directors of the Piedmont Community Foundation (PCF), are pleased to announce the establishment of the John Page Turner (JPT) Community House Fund with PCF. The Fund has been established to ensure the maintenance and security of this important local landmark and center for community services in The Plains, Virginia. Initial funding came from a local family foundation with strong ties to The Plains.
The house was named for John Page Turner who was Mayor of The Plains from 1965 to 1979. Turner was a career teacher at Marshall Middle School and Fauquier High School. The house was built circa 1910 by a much beloved citizen of The Plains, Miss Alice Anne Murray (1847 -1939).
The John Page Turner House is the headquarters of The Plains Community League (TPCL) which provides food aid, tutoring, scholarships and social services to youths, individuals and families in and around The Plains. The landmark house functions as a community center available to all the residents for town events and activities. With TPCL taking the significant step of becoming the owner of the house and property, they approached PCF to assist in creating a fund to help them meet the costs of potential significant capital improvements or major emergency repairs that would fall outside of their annual operating budget.
The goal for the Fund is to build the investment to a minimum of $100,000+ with the community's assistance. Gifts of any size can be made to the Piedmont Community Foundation for the new John Page Turner Community House Fund.
