Notre Dame Academy's Jonathon Malyke Presents at Georgetown University

· From pages 26 of the print edition

Jonathon Malycke, a senior at Notre Dame Academy in Middleburg, was selected as a presenter for the Greater Washington Metropolitan Area Junior Science & Humanities Symposium, which took place Thursday, January 4, 2007. He is one of only five students selected from the entire Washington, D.C. metropolitan area to present to a group of more than 200 students from around the region.

The presentation took place at Georgetown University and was titled, "The Preparation of Model Rocket Nose Cones Using Polyurethane Foam." Discussed was the development of a nose cone made of polyurethane foam that fits into the body of the model rocket, and is able to withstand the flight of a rocket as well as the impact of hitting the ground. This is critical to the world of not only model rocketry, but also that of atmospheric flight, and beyond into space.

Jonathan was mentored by Dr. Ronald Occhiogrosso, a science teacher at Notre Dame Academy.

By virtue of his selection to present at this Symposium, he will be attending the National Junior Science & Humanities Symposium in Alabama this May. He has been accepted at the Air Force Academy as a member of the class of 2011 and is waiting to hear from other colleges as well.

Jonathon Malycke is the son of Dan and Joy Malycke of Purcellville.
