Go Low and Get Low" So You Won't Be Swept Away by a Tornado
Loudoun County residents are encouraged to know what action to take immediately should a tornado strike.
According to the Loudoun County Office of Emergency Management, it is most important to seek shelter and to "go low and get low."
The general rule is to go to the lowest level of a structure you are in, or to seek shelter in the lowest level of a nearby building. The ideal place is a room with no windows with the very best space being a basement. A closet, bathroom or hallway are good options is a basement is not available.
If you cannot reach a building when a tornado is approaching, lay flat on the ground in the open and in a ditch or depression. If you are in a shopping mall, gymnasium or civic center, take shelter in the restroom if at all possible.
Do not stay or seek shelter in mobile homes, and, if possible, protect your body from flying debris with a heavy blanket or sleeping bag.
