Joshua's Hands Awards Three Servant's Heart Scholarships

· From pages 22, 23 of the print edition

Joshua's Hands was established in 1999 in memory of Joshua Guthrie, who was an enthusiastic community volunteer. Joshua's years of service were cut short by his death at the age of 16. Joshua's Hands seeks to continue to be his hands of service in the community and to encourage others to serve.

In addition to teen safe driving programs, an annual Fall Festival that is free to the community, food distribution programs and educational programming, the organization established A Servant's Heart Scholarship to reward Loudoun County seniors for community service. The scholarship is essay based and expanded this year to the potential of three scholarships annually.

The 2008 recipients are from varied backgrounds with diverse interests. Lindsey Smith (home schooled) will attend Mercyhurst College in the fall and has dedicated her life to service. Her essay about her experiences in Zambia, Peru, and even here in Loudoun County touched the judges' hearts. Her attitude is summed up in her T-shirt that says, "How do you live? I live to make a difference."

Susan Gretzkowski (Potomac Falls High School) will attend the College of William and Mary in the fall. Her essay spoke of the things she has learned through service: "…control, discipline, and commitment not through selfish and direct conquest but through the often silent and meek means of servant leadership."

Greg Escobar (home schooled) captured the future of service when he wrote, "My hope is that those I mentor will in turn develop a heart for service and become mentors themselves." He offered a peek into his own Servant's Heart when he wrote, "We may not become famous for our generosity or philanthropy. In the end, no one may remember our names, but they will remember the name of Him on whose behalf we serve: the Lord Jesus Christ. A true servant's heart chooses to serve for the glory of His name."

Joshua's Hands proudly announces a $1000 scholarship to each of our three winners.
