Matthews Elected to ALA Board
Foxcroft School librarian and English teacher Steve Matthews recently became the first independent school librarian elected to the Executive Board of the American Library Association in Jan. He is one of three individuals elected in January to serve three-year terms on the body that sets priorities and has fiscal and personnel oversight of the largest library organization in the world.
At the ALA's Midwinter Meeting in Denver, CO, January 23-28, Matthews was chosen from among eight candidates who represented all aspects of librarianship, including public library directors, university professors, public school administrators, and state library officials.
Matthews, who will assume his Board responsibilities in July, became librarian of Foxcroft's Currier Library in 1977 and has taught English at the School since 1980. A Middleburg, VA resident, he graduated from Hiram College and holds master's degrees, in library science, from the University of Michigan and, in teaching, from the University of Connecticut.
The American Library Association is the largest library organization in the world with over 67,000 members. Its Executive Board is composed of the four officers of the Association and eight at-large members elected by the ALA Council, the 185-member policy making body. The Executive Board is responsible for setting priorities for the Association, overseeing and advancing long-range and strategic planning, fiscal oversight, and the hiring and evaluation of the ALA Executive Director.
