Donnie Walker: If Donnie Walker Builds It, You Will Be Very Happy

· From pages 18, 26, 27 of the print edition

When you want a true partner for a building project in Northern Virginia, whether that project is a machine shed for a historic estate or the construction of the home you've been imagining for decades, Donnie Walker, president of Walker and Clarke Builders is the partner you need.

He's also the ideal partner for restorations, renovations and repairs, no matter how large or small.

A handsome young executive who revived the company his father started over thirty years ago, Donnie, who looks a lot like actor Christian Bale, is as serious about his commitment to clients as he is generous and fair with his staff and suppliers.

"I grew up in Loudoun County," Walker explains. "I want our work to contribute to the character and quality of the county. And I want my crew to be happy and local. We all benefit from that."

When Don Walker, Senior, started Walker and Clarke in 1972, he and his partner specialized in remodeling and were sought out for every aspect of building. He settled with his wife, Karen, in The Horseshoe, off The Narrows Road between Waterford and Lovettsville.

Donnie and his brother, Joey, grew up in one of the most pristine and beautiful areas in Loudoun County, playing beside Catoctin Creek as it meanders through fields of bluebells and buttercups in the spring, and snowy cliffs and rocky beaches in the winter.

His dad began to teach Donnie about the building business when he was seven years old, and his education continued as he worked with his father. Donnie learned how to listen closely to clients, use impeccable craftsmanship and materials, respect original structures and incorporate modern, green materials whenever appropriate.

When Donnie was in high school, Don Walker went to work for Loudoun County, in time serving as Chief Magistrate. But, all the while, Donnie never forgot how much he loved building.

After high school, Donnie worked for a while in the automotive industry, but it wasn't long before he decided to revive Walker and Clarke Builders.

"I let people know that I was available for any job," he said. "What I really loved to do was build beautiful, quality sheds. Machine sheds, garden sheds, wood sheds, doll house sheds, I still love to build them all."

He carefully explains that his sheds are so beautiful because they are built to last 100 years, and he spends a lot of time building beautiful sheds in the winter months and between remodeling jobs.

"There is nothing pre-fab about our sheds," he emphasizes. "I build them to meet my standards for quality which are very high."

And he's telling the truth. Donnie Walker's sheds are palatial. The inside is beautifully finished. The windows glide open and shut. Should you wish a potting shed with cubbies, shelves, and a potting table that Beatrix Jones Farrand would envy, Donnie will build it to suit your every whim and satisfaction.

When he married Morgan May Walker in 2005, he gained a partner who understands both personal and professional commitment. Morgan grew up in the garden design business and is now president and owner of Gardens of Delight near Waterford.

"We both love our work," Donnie said, as their two-year-old daughter darted into his office for her pinwheel. "We've worked hard and we've been very fortunate to have clients who gave us an opportunity to do beautiful work for them, whether large or small. We have excellent references and we enjoy many referrals.

"I want Loudoun County to remain one of the most beautiful places on earth. It's a great pleasure to do our part to contribute to that."
