New Farmers Market Flourishes in D.C.

· From pages 3 of the print edition

First Lady Obama welcomed a group of 18 farmers and producers from small local and sustainable farms in the Chesapeake Bay Watershed Region to the Fresh Farm Market. Washington D.C. Mayor Adrian Fenty, and Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack joined Mrs. Obama as she opened the market. Speaking to the enthusiastic crowd about how farmers markets build great communities, she stressed the importance of eating healthy, local food and encouraged Americans to get to know the farmers that grow their food.

Bernie Prince, cofounder of Fresh Farm Markets, personally thanked Mrs. Obama for "making healthy eating a national priority," adding that "...now we need to make it a national habit."

Endless Summer Harvest offered beautiful gourmet lettuces, specialty green arugula and culinary basil. Solitude offered their complete range of wool products. "We were given celebrity status," said Mary Ellen Taylor of Endless Summer Harvest. "The awareness this market has brought to the importance of farming is invaluable."
