Inspired Spirit of Giving for Salvation Army

· From pages 1 of the print edition

Manuel Simpson's tireless energy and true generosity lifted Middleburg's spirits and encouraged citizens to clear enough time on their calendars to ring the bell in front of Safeway for the Salvation Army during this Christmas season.

$9,055 was raised, more than $2,000 more than the community collected last year, the first season a Salvation Army bell was heard in Middleburg.

Initiated by Simpson to, as he said, "Help us all a play a part in the true meaning of Christmas," the one-hour assignments were welcomed by Middleburg area citizens of all ages.

"It's great to feel part of a larger Christmas spirit," Simpson continued.

"We all want to help as many as we can at the holidays, we just need a way to do it. Ringing the bell for the Salvation Army is a great way to help."

When an hour or two or three weren't filled, Manuel manned the bell himself, wishing everyone good cheer as he requested a contribution to help those less fortunate. With his help, the bell was never silent and the contributions continued unabated.

Perhaps the greatest gift was the model Manuel established for every citizen.

"It only takes a little time and the gifts are so appreciated," he said smiling.

"It feels great to lend a helping hand."
