The Oil Spill Disaster

· By Tom Pratt · From pages 8 of the print edition

This country's and perhaps the world's largest unnatural disaster is reoccurring every day in the Gulf of Mexico because of the sinking of the Deepwater Horizon and subsequent oil well blowout.

BP, Halliburton and Trans Ocean of course are ultimately at fault and must be held accountable for the unprecedented and catastrophic disaster that they collectively caused. But they are not the only culpable culprits.

Our form of government that not only allows but encourages the lobbying system and unchecked corporate contributions to elected officials is most certainly at the root of the disaster. In other more socialistic nations where lobbyists are not as powerful and elections are supported by the government and not corporations this disaster could not have occurred. In those countries such as Norway and Sweden BP is required to drill TWO wells in case of a blowout at these depths. BP gets over 39% of all of its oil from U.S. waters because the cost of doing business is far cheaper and regulations always favor the company.

It is inconceivable that the government regulators would have relied on the company to police itself and take its word on safety procedures as the only voice. How could they have been allowed to drill at depths of over 3 miles into the earth's crust without having tested all possible safety precautions and made sure that they were effective.

This unnatural disaster will affect the entire world for not tens of years but for perhaps hundreds. The Gulf of Mexico is probably the largest feeding ground for aquatic birds and mammals which migrate the world over. When they feed they will take the polluted feed back home. Migrating birds whose feathers are coated in oil tire and fall to the sea, then falcons also migrating take advantage and feed on them thereby ingesting the pollutions themselves. The effects are so far reaching that it is unimaginable what will truly happen over the coming years.

And what is BP doing spending millions of dollars on TV ads featuring CEO, BP Tony Hayward to try and tell the world that BP is a nice and competent company when we all now know that they are the complete opposite. That money should be going to the people and animals whose lives will be changed forever because of the ineptness of BP and the other involved companies. In Hayward's famous statement "I want my life back" there are both people and animals who will never have their lives back because of the criminal and negligent acts committed by BP.
