Letter: It takes a sidewalk to make a Village
Dear Editor, It takes a sidewalk to make a Village. We hear that the Village of Aldie will soon undergo traffic calming. Yippee. What good will that be if we still won't have a safe place to walk? Collecting my own mail at the Aldie Post Office (1700 feet away) will continue to require driving because the shoulders through the Village make foot traffic treacherous.
Sidewalks foster a sense of community and provide safety to those of us who enjoy our villages (such as Middleburg, Upperville, and Hillsboro). Sidewalks encourage healthy living; after all, walking is still man's best medicine. How come Aldie is getting short-changed?
How is it that sidewalks are NOT to be included in this traffic calming project? Wouldn't the funds be better spent for a useful component that fosters community AND safety versus stacked stone walls and decorative curbs?
