New Cub Scout Pack 1737's Good Deed

· By Linda Platt · From pages 5 of the print edition

Middleburg's new Cub Scout Pack recently helped Andy Bergner honor his beloved wife Audrey Windsor Bergner by applying the proceeds from the sale of first editions of her still popular guidebook to give a much-needed coat of paint to the fence at The Pink Box.

Andy found a box of the late Mrs. Bergner's first edition copies of her Visitor's Guide to Middleburg, Virginia and the Surrounding John Singleton Mosby Heritage Area, tucked away in their Middleburg home.

Published in 1997, the firsts had been packed away after the guidebook was revised in 2006.

He knew how much Audrey loved The Pink Box, where she was a docent for many years, and where he continues to serve as a docent today.

With the enthusiastic help of Mary Kay Garwood and Middleburg Millwork the books were sold, the proceeds used to purchase paint and brushes and tools and the plunder was given over to the Cub Scouts who took the much-needed project to a successful conclusion under the direction of Marie Feil.

"Audrey' would," he said smiling, "have approved Middleburg's new Cub Scout Pack is number 1737 to honor Col. Leven Powell's birth. Col. Powell purchased the land now known as Middleburg.

Chartered by Emmanuel Episcopal Church, the Pack currently has 35 scouts with more joining every week.

Santa Claus will meet children at The Pink Box on three weekends this year, November 27th and 28th, December 4th and 5th, and December 11th and 12th.
