A Lady Celebrating a Century of Life Honored
H.E. the Ambassador of Austria and Mrs. Christian Prosl bestowed a Medal of Honor to Vicomtesse Gertrude Zinner de Ponton d'Amecourt, an American of Austrian birth, now 101 years of age, living in the United States. Mme. d'Amecourt has distinguished herself as a gracious and notable international hostess since 1944, when her French diplomat-husband brought her to Washington from New York before the collapse of Warsaw, Poland where they were previously stationed.
During war times, there was no ambassador representing Austria in Washington, thus she served her homeland by hosting and serving as a bridge between the two countries, unofficially. Madame "Gertie" received guests in her home on Wyoming Avenue and even now on Cathedral Avenue. Her cocktail parties and dinners are legendary. She became one of the most respected realtors in DC, helping over 40 embassies to find perfect homes for their ambassadors and consulate offices. She was the toast of the town connecting people from all walks of life and has also been a great supporter of the arts and music.
At the Vin d'honneur in the residence of the Austrian Ambassador, His Excellency read a short missive from the former Governor of California Arnold Schwarzenegger which added a little touch of Hollywood.
Now, celebrating a century of enormous joie de vive, she still can dance the waltz as seen during the WIPAC Galas with John Gardecki and recently at the Russian Ball with her son Guy d'Amecourt and other partners.
