Foxcroft's Think Pink Tournament Makes Cherry Blossom Fund Big Winner

· From pages 1, 16 of the print edition

Although Foxcroft fought valiantly, they did not win their "Think Pink" Basketball Tournament, but their dedication to the fight against breast cancer made the Cherry Blossom Foundation a big winner when Foxcroft Athletic Director Michelle Woodruff announced that $1,000 had been raised through T-shirt sales and donations.

Led by Division I recruit Markell Smith, Norfolk Collegiate School beat Fredericksburg Academy, 54-26, then defeated the Madeira School, 66-47, Saturday to win the second annual tournament.

"They are all champions in my mind," said Jim Atkins, founder and director of the Cherry Blossom Foundation. "We are extremely grateful for their support and help."

Foxcroft's Athletic Association, a student organization led by seniors Sarah Gilmmore of Middleburg, Effie Kilmer of Southampton, NY, and junior Maeve Couzens of Middleburg, ran the concession stand that handled the sales.

The event, which included junior varsity and middle school competitions, drew throngs of people to the School's beautiful Athletic/Student Center.

In the consolation game, host Foxcroft fell to Fredericksburg Academy, 50-29, despite a 14-point effort from senior center Claire Andrews and 11 rebounds from senior forward Sylvia Onukwugha. Paige McDermott led the visitors with 16 points. In the preliminary round, Madeira, defeated Foxcroft, 28-14, building a 17-3 first-half lead and coasting home. Imani Thompson led Madeira with eight points and senior guard Markesha Burnett paced Foxcroft with six points on a pair of 3-point field goals.

The Hill School of Middleburg bested both Loudoun Country Day School and Norfolk Collegiate in the middle school round-robin competition, which brought many Middleburgers to the event.
