Hugh Robert Callaway Wiley

· Dateline: March 4, 2004, Winchester, Virginia – February 10, 2011, Middleburg, Virginia · From pages 2, 16 of the print edition

Hugh Robert Callaway Wiley fought a courageous battle against lymphoma, a battle that ended this last Thursday in his home surrounded by his loving and devoted parents.

Hugh was a first grader at Hill School in Middleburg, Virginia where he was known for his insightful wisdom, good-natured sense of humor, his love of friends and of the playground.

Hugh started playing polo at age 4; he was an accomplished and avid fisherman, golfer, skier, swimmer, bird hunter and poker player who shared his love of these sports with his father, big brother and friends.

Hugh enjoyed precious, quiet moments reading with his mother; and, yet, he relished leading fellow 6-year-olds and his dog Winston through imaginary battles, before facing a real battle of his own.

He will be remembered for his extraordinary and brilliant spirit. He consistently inspired and awed his family and friends with his sparkling - and often startling - wisdom. His enthusiastic character made a striking impression and a lasting imprint on everyone he met. Hugh's valor throughout his physical challenges positively influenced friends and supporters around the world.

Hugh is survived by his mother, Erica Stumvoll Wiley, his father James Carter Wiley and his older brother James Langhorne Wiley, III. Also surviving is his maternal grandfather, Richard O. Stumvoll, of Panama City, Panama, and he was preceded by his maternal grandmother Dorothy Asparren Stumvoll. Hugh is also survived by his paternal grandmother, Jane Burgess Kelly and her husband Timothy A. Kelly of Salem, Virginia and his grandfather James Langhorne Wiley, Jr. and his wife Lynn Wiley, of The Plains, Virginia. Hugh is also survived by his aunts, uncles, cousins, many friends and his loving community.

A memorial service to honor the life of Hugh Robert Callaway Wiley took place Thursday, February 17th at Trinity Church, Upperville, Virginia. A reception followed at The Hill School. Children were welcomed at both events to honor Hugh.

The family asks that in lieu of flowers that donations be made to The Hill School, Middleburg, Virginia and or to "Less Cancer" Next Generation Choices Foundation, Middleburg, Virginia.
