"Hort Coutour": Waterworld

· By Karen Rexrode · From pages 29 of the print edition

Yet another new marketing strategy has surfaced for branding and marketing garden plants. Developed by Jim and Jennifer Monroe, previously of Greenbrier Nurseries in Virginia and West Virginia, it's called "Hort Coutour", a plug at fashion, using good plants to "dress up your garden". Logos, store sign-age, and fancy pots all draw the customer to their new line that includes tropicals, annuals, vegetables and perennials. A few of their plants are new, many are not, all have been chosen for good performance in our area. That is what initially drew me to the line, unlike the very successful "Proven Winners", with plants that sometimes only succeed in a narrow geographical location, the "Hort Coutour" line addresses summer heat and offers impressive tropical plants with unusual foliage, all grown in extra large pots and of superior quality.
