Golf List Mania!

· By Alex Cudaback · From pages 3, 4 of the print edition

This summer, as golfers everywhere dust off their clubs and begin the long-overdue march to the 1st tee, celebrated writers Leonard Shapiro and Ed Sherman aim to fill our heads with all things "golf" with GOLF LIST MANIA!: The Most Authoritative and Opinionated Rankings of the Best and Worst of the Game (Running Press), a comprehensive record of epic moments and massive disappointments, of major heroes and Sunday breakdowns, of sage advice and the greatest pick-up lines to ever be uttered on the set of Caddyshack.

"Both Ed and myself had done similar all-sport list books for the same publisher and both of us have covered golf together for a long time. It just seemed like a no-brainer, and we had a ton of fun doing it," said Shapiro when asked what the impetus was behind the new book.

Shapiro and Sherman have been covering golf as long (or longer) than many of us have been playing.

Sherman was a longtime sportswriter for the Chicago Tribune, including 12 years as the Trib's national golf writer. A winner of numerous Golf Writers awards, he writes a popular golf blog on Crain's Chicago Business (www.chicagobusiness.com). He also hosts "The Scorecard," a Saturday-morning golf show on WCSR-AM 670 in Chicago and heard throughout the Midwest.

Shapiro, also an award-winning sportswriter, wrote for the Washington Post for forty years (covering the national golf beat for 18 years), was president of the Golf Writers Association of America, and is currently a feature columnist for Global Golf Post, a popular digital weekly golf magazine (www.globalgolfpost.com).

On the topic of Tiger Woods, Shapiro said, "I think [he] will shut it down until August when he'll try to come back and play in Akron two weeks before the PGA championship. I hope he's smart enough to get totally healthy before he does return and think long-term, not, 'Oh my god I just missed a major!'" and try to rush back too quickly.

Somewhat presciently, a week before the just-completed U.S. Open at Congressional Country Club outside of D.C., Shapiro predicted, "I believe Rory McIlroy of Ireland, still only 22 years old, will be the next great superstar with a nice run at No. 1. Great player, perfect temperament and a really nice kid who actually spent two days in Haiti for UNICEF before the US Open last week."

As for a most indelible golf memory? That's an easy one for Shapiro, and it's in the book as well.

"On the Sunday of the final round of the 1997 Masters, I was standing next to Lee Elder, the first African American golfer to play in the Masters, about thirty yards from the first tee. We were waiting for Tiger Woods to finish up on the practice putting green and make his way through a funnel of fans to begin his historic final round as the first man of color to win the tournament, with a record score and margin of victory to boot. As Woods was being introduced, I could see the tears welling in Elder's eyes as he took it all in. Then I turned around and gazed back to the nearby clubhouse. The second-floor balcony overlooking the course was lined not so much with Augusta National members but mostly with the men and women who served their meals, mixed their drinks, washed their dishes, shined their shoes, and cleaned their rooms, virtually all of them African American as well. I also felt a shiver down my spine standing there on the memorable afternoon, and I still get goose bumps typing these very words."

From Best Courses to Biggest Chokes, Most Underrated to Worst Dressed Golfers, there's a list for everything in GOLF LIST MANIA!, including original lists written by the top names in the game like Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, Gary Player, and more, plus a Foreword by Jim Nantz.
