Windy Hill Foundation Stepping Out in Green… to The Plains
After 30 years of providing affordable, workforce housing in Middleburg, the Windy Hill Foundation is about to start construction on its first out-of-town project—in The Plains, Virginia. The new project will have 16 units in total: 12 units in three buildings on Fauquier Avenue next to the Post Office and four units in two buildings at the end of Lee Street. All will be certified "green buildings" and will have geothermal heating and cooling systems.
"This is a big deal for The Plains," said Mayor Bob Gurtler, a long-time supporter of the project. "It will go a long way toward providing housing for local teachers, deputies, fire fighters, and the generation of young people from The Plains who had to move away because they couldn't find housing here that they could afford."
With both two-bedroom and three-bedroom units, rents will range from $895 -$1050 per month. Two of the units on Lee Street will be fully handicap accessible. All units will be equipped with washers, dryers, and dishwashers. The units will be available for occupancy early in 2012.
Windy Hill Foundation has created a special Board of Directors (WHF-II), including a majority of local citizens from The Plains, to oversee and guide this $5 million project. The project was made possible by the generous leadership of the Ohrstrom family and Andrea Currier.
Donations are still being sought to complete the $700,000 local fund raising drive to support this project. The remaining $4.3 million will come from low-income housing tax credits and low-interest loans from the Virginia Housing Development Authority arranged by the Windy Hill Foundation.
