A Delicate Drink of Cool, Clear Water
If you've ever closely observed a thirsty horse delicately breaking the surface of a pool of water, you will understand and appreciate the magnitude of the wonderful Nic Fiddian-Green sculpture, entitled "Still Water" that greets visitors to the National Sporting Museum.
The massive hammered sculpture sheathed in hammered lead that balances so delicately over an imaginary pool of water is a perfect reflection of Fiddian-Green's passionate obsession with the head of the horse. Although the piece is nine feet by ten feet and two inches, and is immensely heavy, it impossible not to be breathtakingly swept away to a refreshing summer stream when in its presence.
"Nic is a genius," said one of the NSLM Directors, Turner Reuter. "The delicacy of this piece, made by hand of hammered lead, is astounding. His classical influence is amply evident, but, as we all know, the horse is a timeless icon of human endeavor."
"The thing is that, for me, it's not about the horse," explained Fiddian-Green. "It's about the shape, the form, the finish."
Be sure to visit Fiddian-Green's "Still Water" at The National Sporting Museum on view through May. If you love horses, and admire their ability to express emotions, you will be enchanted by this sculpture.
