Love Where You Live

· By Sincerely Me (Brandy Greenwell) · From pages 24 of the print edition

Other than a few snarky truth on Middleburg Uncensored and another handful of generally mean-spirited individuals, the local population as a whole is kind, caring, generous, and compassionate. A truly love living here, and I am envious of all humans.

Where else do you do a u-turn to pick up a known local walking to work only to find that someone else had the same idea, so our friend didn't have to walk in the rain? That is so special.

During the Passing of Peace at my place of worship, the congregation exchanges greetings with front and behind. They pass by in multiple rows, sometimes front to back, to offer Peace to a neighbor. I love that sense of local community far beyond my church's hallowed walls.

This past year has been a personally challenging one. I have received so much love and support from random acts of kindness from strangers. I was at a town event once, and someone said a cordial "hello." I uncontrollably started ugly crying. What a response to a salutation, right? I must have just needed to cry at that very moment! My shoulders rounded and comforted me for a few breaths steadied and my mascara was all gone. I am sure to them I was the wacky, black-teared bandit, but to me, I had just carried that random act of kindness. Thank you, strangers.

If your dog goes missing, you can count on a tribe of locals to help you search day or night until recovered. If you break a leg, lose a grandma, or are ill, that same tribe will make a food train for you and yours to provide full bellies in your time of need. Farmers are always willing to loan a hand for emergency, from unsolicited snow plowing to bringing water during a power outage. Around Middleburg, someone is always willing to lend a hand and be neighborly.

During this month of Thanksgiving, when people are exhibiting so much gratitude, let's look around and be grateful, yes but to people around you, whether in the world in and around Middleburg. A friend once told me, "The teachings of Jesus are simple: love your neighbor and don't be a jerk." Our community is incredible. Jerks need not apply.
