Sweet Revenge: Chocolate Mousse

· By Susan Williams · From pages 26 of the print edition

My husband, at this moment, is intently watching the National Basketball Association (NBA) playoffs. Sitting in his chair, he intently watches as 10 genetically-altered, tattooed behemoths, who collect paychecks larger than the GNP of some third-world countries, go through extraordinary maneuvers, bumping and grunting to put a little beach ball through a little metal hoop.

Accomplishing this feat on rare occasions, they gesture wildly, grunt, bump chests, scowl at their opponents, but fortunately stop short of publicly marking their conquered territory in the manner of our four-legged ancestors.

Fortunately, for our marriage, the NBA playoffs last only 6 or 7 months after the normal 14-month season. If this were not the case, the frequency of our "intimate moments" would rival that of the 17 year Cicada.

However there is "sweet revenge" for we neglected wives-Chocolate! A recent survey showed that the majority of women would rather have chocolate than have "intimate moments". They had to take a survey to find that out?

So below is my favorite recipe, to be eaten next to your husband as he watches the NBA playoffs. Occasionally yell out "great pick and roll", whatever that means, then have another serving of chocolate. True marital bliss!

This chocolate mousse uses dark chocolate (good for you) and is low in carbs, due to the use of Splenda rather than sugar.

Melt in a heavy saucepan stirring constantly:
* 1 1/2 pounds of good quality dark chocolate
* 1/4 cup fresh orange juice
* 1/4 cup Grand Marnier

Cool chocolate mixture for 20 minutes.

Beat, until lemony in color, 4 egg yolks. Add yolks to cooled chocolate mixture, incorporating thoroughly.

Whip 1 1/2 cups of heavy cream until thickened and gradually add 1/4 cup of Splenda, until stiff. Beat 9 egg whites until stiff. Carefully fold the egg whites into the whipped cream mixture.

Stir about 1/4th of the egg white and cream mixture into the chocolate mixture until thoroughly incorporated. Then fold in the remainder.

Pour the mousse into a large crystal bowl or 12 individual dessert bowls and refrigerate for at least 3 hours.

To serve add dollops of whipped cream with shaved chocolate for garnish.

Note: The chocolate mousse can be frozen for up to one month. Thaw in refrigerator.
