Broadway is Just Around the Corner

· From pages 13 of the print edition

Broadway is only a half hour's drive from Middleburg at Shenandoah University (SU) in Winchester, Virginia where students and faculty perform impeccably for our pleasure without a long, tiring trip to New York City.

SU has 2800 students on a 103-acre campus at the intersection of I-81 and Route 50, and an additional campus on Route 522 and in Leesburg.

My wife, Molly, and I have been going to SU productions for years and have never seen anything but perfect performances.

There is wonderful variety and a performance practically every evening. The recent Shenandoah Summer Music Theater performance of Seussical featuring Tom Sweitzer was tremendous and should not be missed if it is performed again.

Six schools and 80 programs of study thrive on the SU campus: Arts and Sciences; the Harry F. Byrd School of Business; Shenandoah Conservatory; the School of Health Professions; the Bernard J. Dunn School of Pharmacy and the School of Continuing Education.

SU students are evenly divided between graduates and undergraduates. They may pursue a Liberal Arts degree as well as any of the above programs. The university has a robust athletic program, and competes in the NCAA Division III of the Dixie Intercollegiate Conference. Shentel Stadium, with 2500 seats, is home to football and lacrosse, and the Women's team recently won honors in the Dixie All Conference.

Life-Long Learning is a program designed for those who wish to continue their education. Students in this curriculum may participate in individual courses of specific interest and are not required to pursue full-time study.

Shenandoah Conservatory Arts Academy (SCAA) offers classes and private instruction to more than 1900 students of all ages. With a generous grant from the Mellon Foundation, children (ages 8-14) develop musical skills and vocal technique in a choral setting. An arts festival in the fall will showcase performers in music, dance and art.

As a community service, the Department of History and the Tourism Center focus on local areas of interest and the history of the lower Shenandoah Valley. This information is shared with the Chamber of Commerce and other civic groups to promote tourism in the area.
