Art Within Reach
One of the rewards for taking a stroll off Middleburg's main drag is to discover The Studio at 17 West Federal Street. The gallery is a vibrant, inviting space filled with the current (through September) art show of beautiful fine art photography. The Studio's owner is Franny Kansteiner, who immediately brings out a large, bright, dynamic painting of an African baobab tree. "My husband Walter and I share a deep love of Africa, wildlife, and conservation, and often the art in the gallery reflects those passions."
Two years ago Franny and Valli Arader opened their gallery as a place to study the arts, so they named it The Studio. They have 8 - 10 shows a year coupled with lectures, workshops, play and book readings, and film and salsa dance workshops. One such upcoming event is a short story reading by John Rolfe Gardiner on October 1st.
"Seeing all the talented artists in Virginia who need a place to showcase their work, we made a conscious decision to focus on contemporary art; and to offer styles a little outside of what people expect to see in Middleburg. Our goal is to provide a place that's lively and interesting, and to find ways to help connect people to the arts and this community."
In a corner a soft coated Wheaton terrier changes position and goes back to sleep. "That's Clara," Franny laughs, "She's the hardest working dog in America."
"In addition to selecting museum quality art, we make sure our shows have all price levels. Some of our paintings sell for thousands of dollars, but if you are a collector just starting out, you'll find pieces that sell in the hundreds."
In addition to fine art, you can find unique gift items as well.
For those who seek the unique, The Studio combines a great atmosphere, interesting artist workshops, and a range of prices to bring art within reach.
