Green Investment Leader Visits Horse Country
Amy Domini, recently named one of the Top 100 people to watch this decade by Time Magazine as well as one of the 50 leading individuals in the History of Investing by Financial Planning magazine, came to Upperville the other night to speak on "Conservation and the Power of Investments" at an event hosted by John Campagna of Legg Mason. The event in Upperville was held on the Hunter Head Pub's patio under a beautiful fall night.
As guests mingled over glasses of Virginia wines and locally raised food and cheeses prepared by the pub's staff, Ms. Domini discussed how environmental issues can be positively impacted by the way we invest our money. "The world we live in today was shaped by investment decisions made by previous generations", says Ms. Domini. "Today, investors can follow this simple truth and use their investment dollars wisely in order to create the future we hope awaits us and our children."
John Campagna, the host for the event and financial advisor whose practice focuses on Environmentally Responsible and Sustainable Investing at Legg Mason, echoes Ms. Domini's sentiment. "With all of our concerns about land use, open space preservation and wildlife conservation in this area, it is important that we as individuals consider all methods we have available to us to help support these causes. Being conscious of where we invest can in the long run make the difference."
Ms. Domini is a pioneer in the field of Socially Responsible Investing ("SRI"), founder of Domini Funds (a leader SRI mutual fund company), and sits on various pension and endowment boards. In explaining how SRI works Ms. Domini states, "All of our investments meet a comprehensive set of social and environmental standards because we believe that corporations that meet certain baseline standards of behavior are helping to create a healthy and wealthy society with increased opportunities for everyone. We believe that companies, government agencies, and nonprofit organizations that have an authentic commitment to their societies and to the natural environment are better positioned to succeed and prosper". This she emphasizes also means good investment opportunities for investors.
