Going to the Dogs

· By Brian Lichorowic · From pages 16 of the print edition

I'm not a Vet and I don't play one on TV but I have been making my own dog food for some time. I'd be lying if I told you that the recent wave of tainted pet food circulating our country didn't bother me. Whether it is intentional or accidental, I never would have imagined such a thing would occur.

My wife and I have two wonderful Golden Retrievers, (Berkeley, 13 and Mystery, 10) whose breed, in general, has a history of hip and joint problems in their "golden years" and a 150 pound Bernese Mountain dog (Harley, 5). Who is basically a large rug we always have to maneuver around and he's happiest when he's eating, sleeping or sitting on your feet. He works up an appetite by having an aspiring love affair with a chaise lounge cushion while frolicking around in the front yard.

And me the proud Pappa…

Usually I use these recipes as a mixer. They soften up the food for our older dogs and provides them with a good amount of supplemental nutrition. Every day I give them their dry food along with a small amount of one of the following recipes that I mix in with it. They seem to love it. No one turns their nose up and they're healthy as horses (so to speak).

And besides, I like cooking for dogs… they tip better and complain less.
