Pride Rock Comes to Middleburg For "Cape Town in the Country" Benefit

· From pages 3, 4 of the print edition

Lions everywhere will roar with approval when Lebo M and the Broadway cast of The Lion King sing for the guests at Sandi Young and P. Jay Fetner's June 23rd 'Cape Town in the Country' benefit to create post-apartheid opportunities for underprivileged South African students and create more economic advancement in the country.

Lebo M, the Grammy and Tony Award winning arranger, lyricist, singer and performer, will perform under a canopy before black-tie attired dinner guests at beautiful Coachman Farms on Zulla Road in The Plains. Prior to the main event, recording artist Mbandi, whose latest release includes the melodious female voice often heard on Yanni sound tracks, will perform for VIP guests.

Combining a love for Africa, her philanthropic mission and renowned imagination and creativity, Sandi Young, chairman of the event, will dedicate the proceeds to benefit the United States South African Wine Foundation, a sister organization of the South African Wine Foundation NGO that provides an education for young South Africans who are trained only as wine makers, thereby leading to lives of alcoholism and lack of hope.

The spectacular evening promises guests scrumptious delicacies, fine wines music, dancers, history and culture in one of the areas most exquisite Hunt Country settings.

"When Judy Chambers and Gavin Pitersea, a South African businessman and philanthropic force, I immediately knew this would be a tremendously challenging but immensely worthwhile endeavor," Young explained. "This will certainly be my grandest fundraising adventure to date!"

After weeks of contact and negotiation with New York booking agents, Sandi learned that Lebo M and Gavin Pitersea were taking The Lion King to Johannesburg for the first time to celebrate the show's 10th anniversary.

It was Lebo who brought the insatiable spirit of Nelson Mandela's endurance of his 27-year prison sentence to return to lead his country, and the way Mandela's story paralleled Lebo's own struggle in the ghetto of Soweto, to the amazing music and score that tells the story about a lion returning to Pride Rock in The Lion King.

"Lebo's beginning was rough," Sandi said," but his dreams carried from being a nine-year-old performing in smoky homeland nightclubs to Los Angeles where he begged on street corners, cleaned floors and worked at the famous double arches until he landed on the doorstep of Quincy Jones and famed composer Hans Zimmer and Disney."

Lebo is highly regarded as the composer of some of the most moving and resonant music in modern times.

P. Jay Fetner, who will host the event, is an author, writer of the award-winning The African Safari, an avid polo player and owner of The Golden Zebra Polo team. Also well known for his African decorated guest house at Coachman Farms, Fetner has an extensive art collection.

Guests will have an opportunity to bid on fabulous items during a silent auction, as well as a live auction for four items, one of which is a trip to South Africa.
