Ritz Carlton's UK Team Takes Trophy at First America's Cup of Polo
Exciting chukkers, dazzling entertainment, magnificent ponies, memorable rock and roll, crackling fireworks and daring displays of high-flying F-18 Navy jets provided a feast for the senses at Morven Park's First America's Cup. The charity event took place on a pristine, newly constructed polo field at the historic estate and attracted a crowd of over 4,000 to commemorate the 400th anniversary of Jamestown.
The U.S. Polo Team, sponsored by Cartier and led by America's Cup Founder and Chairman Tareq Salahi, took three chukkers from the UK Team captained by Julian Hipwood. But, at the end of the fast-paced match, the Ritz Carlton sponsored UK team led the day seven chukkers to three.
In addition to winning the Cartier trophy and engraved individual silver trays, each member of the Ritz Carlton UK Team took home Cartier stainless steel Roadster watches.
The true winner of the day was Journey for the Cure, the not-for-profit organization that will benefit from funds raised to help The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and the Multiple Sclerosis Society.
A sensational two-hour performance by legendary rock group, Journey, brought fans to their feet to cheer on their favorites, and the band debuted a new single, "Winds of Freedom," before they concluded their show.
Claude McKnight of Take 6 sang an inspirational interpretation of "God Bless America."
U.S. Navy F-18's performed thrilling flyovers and a touching memorial to Virginia Tech victims as Blackwater USA opened the school's flag alongside U.S. and UK flags during their parachute jump.
Everyone in attendance agreed that fireworks over Morven Park should take place much more often as the sparkling display concluded the evening and cast glittering lights on the beautiful, historic estate.
Guests who enjoyed the day in reserved tents, were treated to delicious fare by Market Salamander of Middleburg and Palm Beach, and toasts were raised in tribute to the day's events with a shiraz-viognier blend created by Chairman Salahi's Oasis Winery.
Enjoying the festivities were many notable guests including Italian Ambassador Giovanni Castellaneta, Afghan Ambassador Said Jawad, Qubad Talabani, son of Iraqi President Jalal Talabani, Salamander Hospitality owner and Washington Mystics co-owner Sheila Johnson, NBC's David Gregory, Redskins' offensive coordinator Al Saunders and America's Most Wanted television host John Walsh.
Plans began immediately for the 2008 America's Cup of Polo when Ambassador Giovanni announced that Italy will challenge America in next year's event at Morven Park. Scheduled for May 10, the event will always fall on the second Saturday in May to ensure the best chance for the same lovely weather enjoyed at Morven Park this year.
