Middleburg Players Make Donation in Tribute to Fred Spencer
The Middleburg Players recently surprised the directors of the Piedmont Community Foundation (PCF) with a $1,000 donation to be added to the Frederick L. Spencer, Jr. Memorial Fund, an endowment fund established in June. This latest donation to the Fund was the result of a successful theatrical production of "It Was Mostly Fun" based on the life and times of local legend Doc Saffer, and how he and his pals grew up in Middleburg.
Saffer said, "Fred had a lot to do with the play. He wrote the lyrics" at the request of Jean Gold who was the moving force behind getting the Saffer story into print and play format.
Bunny Shick, representing the local performance group, sent along a note with the donation; "Middleburg Players are thrilled that "It Was Mostly Fun" did so well we can contribute to PCF in Fred's name. Hope to have the opportunity again".
Ms. Shick said that Molly Spencer, Fred's widow, knew about the gift and was so pleased that Fred would be honored in this manner by the performance group which was near and dear to his heart.
Fred was an active member of the Middleburg Players before his life was taken in an automobile accident in April. The fund will make annual grants available to nonprofit groups representing the arts, music and drama. First grant applications will be accepted in the fourth quarter of 2008. Those wishing to make their own remembrance for Fred through the community foundation may send their memorial gift to: PCF, P.O. Box 402, Middleburg, VA 20118.
