Local Christmas Tree Growers Join FedEx To Deliver Holiday Spirit to Troops & Their Families
Christmas tree growers across the country are donating freshly cut trees to a Federal Express holiday initiative that last year delivered 11,000 donated trees to military bases across the U.S. for families of military personnel stationed overseas. Growers are asked to donate any trees they can spare. Donated trees are brought to specific tree farms to be collected by FedEx trucks that take them all over the U.S. "This year, the target is 15,000 to 17,000 trees," said Rick and Karen Lowe of Lowelands Farm who are participating in the program. "Commercial nurseries can also donate, as can individual customers who may buy a tree for themselves and provide one to be sent via FedEx's Trees for Troops initiative." Layng's Flower Farm, Catoctin Gardens, Joe's Trees, Loudoun Nursery-Bellwether Tree Farm, Oakland Orchard Farm and Ticonderoga Farm will donate trees this year. Tom O'Haloran delivered 100 trees from himself and other growers in central Virginia are also participating. Three hundred trees have already been shipped to Kuwait for distribution to U.S. troops in Kuwait, Afghanistan, Iraq, Qatar and Baghdad. One hundred trees departed on November 28th for the Navy's Fifth Fleet aboard ships in South West Asia.
