Albert's Corner: Friends for Life
I have a business associate and friend named Leroy (yes, some dogs have business associates). Anyway, Leroy is a Border Collie and canine celebrity. He has been on David Letterman, in television commercials and in movies. He paints and plays the piano. More than once, he's gotten his own seat on commercial airplanes. He even has an agent! You can learn more about him at www.theamazingleroy.com.
Anyway, Leroy had a birthday party last weekend and, in true Leroy fashion, it was a blast! I must admit that I understand why a lot of people are skeptical about celebrating dog occasions with parties. After all, we're generally pretty happy just being with our families. Even so, having a party for your dog can be a great way to do something a little new and different. These parties aren't just for celebrities, I assure you! Regular pups deserve parties too!
At Leroy's bash, there was a big cake for people and a big cake made especially for puppies. The theme of the party was the circus, so cotton candy and popcorn were on hand for the human guests. All of the dogs had an absolutely great time romping and playing, of course, but the people had a pretty great time too. Dogs are very entertaining to watch, so people who didn't feel like making small talk could happily interact with us and take our pictures.
People who were not usually comfortable in social situations suddenly had no problem talking with strangers about their pets. Parents enjoyed watching their kids laughing and playing. Kids were having a magical time. It turns out that pet parties are a fantastic way to bring people together.
If you want to have a party for your pet, there are just a few things to remember. You'll want to pick a place that can stand up to rambunctious dogs. In other words, nothing too fancy for this celebration! In good weather, a simple backyard works just fine. When it's too cold or hot to be outside, a basement, garage or family room can work too. Make sure that all the dogs that are invited have been socialized and are friendly with other dogs, adults and children. Finally, at least one person should be totally dedicated to supervising the festivities. Pick a theme and get some fun party favors. If you have children, you can involve them by incorporating their artwork into the decor and by enlisting their help baking dog treats.
The best part is that pet parties are, by their very nature, completely casual, totally low-stress and all in good fun. No one expects wonderful food or elaborate decorations. In fact, this is the kind of thing that can be pulled together artfully even without lots of time or money. Plus, you just might find that your four-legged friend can bring two-legged friends into your life. Everybody benefits!
Did I mention that Leroy's party included cake for dogs? I did? Well, it bears repeating. There was cake just for me! Life is good! Thanks Leroy!
