Council Makes Commitment to Fight Against Breast Cancer
Middleburg's Town Council has joined the local fight against breast cancer by waiving parking fees on Saturday, Oct. 4 in support of that day's Nanette's Walk, a two mile stroll around the town to raise money to defeat breast cancer.
The Council authorized The Cherry Blossom Breast Cancer Fund, conductor of the Walk, to place breast cancer-pink bags, with notes asking patrons to donate in the Town's businesses, over its 173 parking meters.
"We know the horrors of breast cancer", said Vice-Mayor Darlene Kirk, "so we were very receptive to The Cherry Blossom Fund's request to support Nanette's Walk and it was our idea to waive the fees and ask parkers to donate in the shops and restaurants. We are Painting Middleburg Pink."
This year's Nanette's Walk was expected to raise more than $30,000 before the Town's initiative, said its founder, James Atkins. "A Fall weekend in Middleburg attracts thousands of visitors", he said, "so this endorsement by our caring council members is sure to help us raise a lot more."
Council members also will personally contribute toward the Nanette's Walk. "We hope the community will reach deep into its pockets to join us in this fight", said Councilman Trowbridge Littleton.
The two mile Nanette's Walk starts at 9 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 4 in downtown Middleburg with its proceeds going to breast cancer detection and treatment for local women and for research to eliminate the disease.
