OBAMA'S FIRST 100 DAYS FROM BEYOND THE BELTWAY
It has become a tradition to assess a new President's First 100 days in office. With Obama there have been a number of firsts and numerous broken promises.
Obama became the first President to fire a CEO of a Fortune 500 company when he sacked the head of General Motors.
He was the first President to break U.S. protocol and BOW before another head of state, the king of Saudi Arabia.
He is also the first American President to call his own country "arrogant" while on foreign soil.
Obama is the first President to use a teleprompter at a press conference. He is the first President to propose TRIPLING the national debt.
During the campaign Obama promised to keep lobbyists out of his administration and set new standards for appointments. He has appointed lobbyists as well as TAX CHEATS to some of the highest positions in his government. He promised to review spending LINE by LINE, create transparency and use his veto pen on earmarks. The first budget bill he signed had eight thousand earmarks. His stimulus package had no congressional hearings, no congressional debate and was not made available to the public until 20 hours before the vote in congress.
During the campaign Obama praised school voucher programs and pointed to the DC program as a model. Now, under pressure from the teacher's union, he is letting his Education Secretary kill the DC school voucher program.
He promised to cut taxes on the middle class. Yet his renewable energy plan calls for a "light switch tax" that will cost the average family of 4 an additional $3,000.00 per year.
Obama promised to pursue Al Quaeda and the war on terror. Now his administration has banned the use of the words "war on terror". Instead it now is "overseas contingency operations". THAT WILL SCARE THE HELL OUT OF THOSE TERRORISTS.
He promised to look forward and leave the past behind. Now he has left the door open to prosecute former Bush administration officials for authorizing interrogation techniques that prevented terrorist attacks on the US after 9/11.
Obama said he would "put aside childish things" and become bi-partisan in his efforts. A recent national survey shows his actions to be the most polarizing of recent presidents. Yes, even more than Bush.
One promise he has kept is to tax the rich. However, his effort to reduce the deductions wealthy Americans can take on charitable contributions may just break his pledge to "spread the wealth." Charitable contributions are expected to drop by more than five billion.
