Notre Dame Academy Opens Varsity Baseball Season
The 2010 Notre Dame Academy Dragons Baseball season home opener against Warren County H.S. was an exciting start to the new season and the inaugural game for new Head Coach Brett Fuller. Starting pitcher Kendall Ulmer (Junior) showed that he was up to the task with a promising start, allowing only one earned run while scattering six hits, striking out seven and walking one. Connor Smedile (Junior) led the Dragons going 2 for 2, with a Double and a Triple, two runs scored, and 2 Walks. His brilliant defense kept the game close as he ran down a blast to deep left-center to rob Warren County's A. Nicholson of an extra base hit. Short Stop Brian Balagurchik (Senior) batted in one run on a deep drive to right field with Ulmer and Yun Shin (Junior) registering the other RBIs. The Dragons led for four innings but Warren County fought back and pulled ahead in the 6th inning before reliever Daniel Goldstein (Junior) mopped up for the Dragons. Goldstein also started a comeback effort to lead off the bottom of the 7th inning with a base hit, followed by another by right fielder, Yun Shin– sending Goldstein to 3rd. With the tying run at second, Connor Smedile drew an intentional walk, but the Dragons were unable to score, falling to visiting Warren County 4-3.
The Dragons bounced back from their opening day loss with a vengeance. Senior, Brian Balagurchik pitched 5 innings of 1 hit shutout baseball with the help of a solid defensive effort. Notre Dame didn't waste any time in getting their offense fired up, with runners at 2nd and 3rd and 1 out, Junior 1st baseman Evan Woods ripped a double to deep left center, driving in 2 runs. The Randolph Macon Yellow Jackets threatened in the 3rd and 4th innings, with runners at 3rd but Balagurchik got them to ground out to the infield to shut them down. With runners at 2nd and 3rd in the bottom of the 4th inning, Junior Center Fielder, Connor Smedile beat out an infield ground ball hit to the Jackets Short Stop, driving in 1 run and then drew a throw on his attempted steal of 2nd, resulting in another run and another runner in scoring position. Smedile took 3rd base too, and Junior Short Stop Kendall Ulmer drew a walk. The Jackets' defense quickly began to unravel as Balagurchik and Woods continued the torrid offensive pace which was capped off with a 2 run base hit to right field by Junior Catcher Daniel Anderson. The Dragons held on defense to wrap up a convincing 8-0 win.
