Fire and Rescue Issues
In response to the queries from Councilmember about the status of the Middleburg Volunteer Fire Department, Mayor Davis reported that she had received a letter from Paul Draisey, Treasurer of the volunteer organization, indicating that "the career staff had returned to the Middleburg station as of last Sunday [August 7]."
All of Middleburg's career, non-volunteer, fire and rescue personnel had left the Middleburg Station on orders from the county after an incident on the night of July 13.
They returned, according to Draisey's letter, under the terms of a new protocol governing the duties and responsibilities of career and volunteer staff.
Davis told her colleagues that Draisey had sent his regrets that neither he, nor any other senior officer in the department could attend August's council session personally.
According to the Mayor, Draisey " . . . apologized for any confusion and explained that the career staff was still on duty to serve Middleburg and Aldie even though they left the immediate area.
Draisey's letter also indicated that demolition continued in preparation for expansion of the fire station. The department will provide updates on progress, he said.
Vice Mayor Kirk observed that the domolition crews working on the station were both noisy, and hard at work on some mornings by 6:30 a.m. Town Planner and Zoning Administrator David Beniamino asked that Ms. Kirk contact him directly, if and when she heard construction starting before 7:00 AM.
