Sad News for Middleburg Area Skiers

· From pages 2, 3 of the print edition

Several generations of Middleburg area skiers who grew up skiing at Bryce will be saddened to hear of the passing of Jack Kern of the Bryce Mountain National Ski Patrol.

Jack will be remembered by many readers. He worked at Bryce as a volunteer for several decades.

Area residents may not know that Jack retired as a Brigadier General in the US Army, having served in Bosnia, Iraq and Afghanistan, in addition to his civilian work. He helped many generations of Hill School students and others on Fridays and weekends during the ski season.

He died from complications following heart surgery and will be buried with full military honors at Arlington National Cemetery on October 18, 2012, beginning at 3.00 p.m. at Fort Myer Old Post Chapel.
