Dogs, heat and exercise
Often I am asked what is the best time of day to do cardio outside with our pups. It might be a walk or a run. Many factors come into play here. Some people are morning exercises and some afternoon or evening. For many, morning is out because of careers and they usually have to do their exercise in the evening.
The other question is, do you take your pup with you? Since summer is upon us, let's address warm weather exercising.
Pups do not really sweat and can only cool themselves down by panting and a little bit through the sweat pads in their paws. The formula to decide if you should take your pup is the temperature plus humidity. Studies have shown if those two figures added together are greater than 150, its best not to do intense exercise with your dog outside. In other words, if the temperature is 75 degrees and the humidity is 80%, that would be 155, studies show that is to hot for your pup. Heat stroke is a reality for our furry friends. Their fur captures the heat, imagine running in a fur coat in excess humidity. They do not have the ability to pace themselves, they are excited to run and be with you. Also, they can't tell you to slow down or that they are overheating. Heat stroke can be deadly for our pets. In my opinion, head out early in the morning or late in the evening. If you are unsure, it is best to go with your gut and to not do intense exercise with your pet when the temperature and humidity are high. Running with our pets is fun, so just use the formula and common sense to keep the workout safe and enjoyable.
